This is the main principal of the Japanese version of chess called "Shogi". It changes the game a lot because you have to be a lot more intricate in constructing defensive "fortresses" while you can also be super aggressive by dropping pieces behind your opponents.

Drag & drop is a trash way to do a mouse interface. That's the real problem. You can't mouse slip nearly as easily if you click to select and then click to place (or similar).

When he blundered his rook, you could have trapped his queen with your dark squared bishop.
Granted, rook for queen is slightly worse than rook for nothing, but the knight would have ended up in the corner, the queen was very active, and you would have gained a queen to play elsewhere.
