  1. Can’t believe you didn’t mention 5D chess with interdimensional travel

  2. One thing which nobody seemed to mention is that chess960 is the only variant which has the same endgames as regular chess (because only the opening is changed). Even bullet chess has different endgames to regular non-bullet chess, because in bullet it's all about the clock.

  3. 29:19 Another advantage Bughouse has over Crazyhouse is that white isn't winning from the starting position. I haven't played Crazyhouse, but I've heard it's just too imbalanced when played at a high level.

  4. Jesse, we totally need to see a video on your bughouse opening!

  5. I'm a sucker for horde chess even though it's objectively broken. There's a pure enjoyment I get from pushing 10 million pawns!

  6. Atomic is quite an interesting variant and could have justifiably replaced several of these IMO. Admittedly it can get into some bizarre endgames, that's maybe a downside.

A note on crazyhouse: I consider it a flawed game because, when you win material, the effect is doubled (you win a piece on the board, you're actually ahead TWO pieces once you drop it) This effectively makes the game incredibly materialistic.

  7. I'll be whating for that video on the bone Jesse…

  8. I had a great time listening to this one. I laughed out loud multiple times, especially at David’s description of Chessable, and Jesse’s hatred of everything new. I think a ranking of non chess games would also be a lot of fun. Another dojo talks idea is Jesse gets drunk and just yells about new stuff like self driving cars or induction stoves.

  9. By design, King's Right Chess is not available in Chess960 but it is, I think, the most strategically rich variant of regular chess . The only difference being that both Monarchs sit to the right of their Queen. All other rules and notation are the same. It is a simple change … but what a change! With the King/Queen symmetry broken, all new opening strategies are needed.

  10. I like how David was bashing Chessable and then he's says, "I'd rather be doing endgame studys" as if Kostya's course didn't exist.

  11. 23:30 Soccer pitches are different width's in different stadiums. Barcelona's pitch at the Camp Nou is wider than standard and English pitches are tighter than most.

  12. Honestly, bughouse kind of got me into chess. The people in the office I worked in played it a lunch. A bunch of introverts came alive and started trash talking and throwing pieces around excitedly. I knew how the pieces moved a little and they invited me in. It was great fun. I'd be coached by my teammate and picked up some strategy. Eventually I graduated into "real" chess. I think it really is a way a lot of people get brought into the game who weren't really looking to begin with.

  13. Professional chess needs the support of the chess playing masses, and we love the game as it is. We only care about the draw death of chess when we're watching top players, not when we're playing, and if 960 became the new standard all the rich history and much of the lore of chess would be amputated. No thanks. As a player, chess is all I want and will ever need.

I think this is what everyone in chess understands whether they think about it or not, and I believe it's the underlying reason why 960 hasn't, and won't, catch on.

  14. I love 3-check. The tactics are interesting. For example there are some openings where you can sac a bishop and a queen on f7 and then win with the killer silent move, Nf3! And as weird as it sounds White has forced "3-checkmate", Black’s king being unable to evade the last check from the f3 knight in a few moves.

  15. Teh Ulti maate verannt is DRUNK CHESS!

  16. Kriegspiel is a classic alternative to Fog of War and not dependent on computers (but is dependent on an umpire)
